Dear Friends and Comrades,

PALESTINIAN AMBASSADOR WELCOMES ANC MOVE TO DOWNGRADE EMBASSY IN ISRAEL
Palestinian Ambassador to South Africa Hashem Dajani has welcomed the move by the ANC National Policy Conference to downgrade the SA embassy in Israel as an "advanced move to put pressure on the apartheid government of Israel in order to end occupation of the state of Palestine." Dajani added that the move would mark a recognition of the Palestinian right to self-determination and statehood. Click here.

SA CHRISTIAN ORGANIZATION WELCOMES DOWNGRADE OF EMBASSY IN ISRAEL

Reverend Moss Ntlha, on behalf of the Christian theological organization Kairos Southern Africa has issued a statement welcoming the downgrade and added that we “join fellow churches and Christians of South Africa in welcoming the recommendation by branches of the ANC which was adopted by the National Policy Conference of the ANC to downgrade the South African Embassy in Tel Aviv…this is the sort of bold action, not just words, which is required by the ANC and South African government. Action in the form of sanctions is what is being asked for by Palestinians including Palestinians Christians." Click here to read the statement online.

SOUTH AFRICA'S GOVERNING ANC PARTY ADOPTS RECOMMENDATION TO DOWNGRADE EMBASSY IN ISRAEL
South Africa’s ruling party, the African National Congress (ANC), at its National Policy Conference (NPC), has adopted a recommendation by branches and provinces to downgrade the SA Embassy in Israel.

The ANC holds a major policy conference every five years where policy recommendations are debated and forwarded to the party’s elective congress which will take place in December. There were, in the main, three proposals discussed. Firstly, a complete shutdown of the SA Embassy in Israel. Secondly, a downgrade of the SA Embassy in Israel. And, thirdly, a downgrade following an investigation. All three were debated but at the end the second option of a downgrade was agreed to by the Commission and thereafter by the Plenary of the NPC.

The resolution on the downgrade reads: “The commission called for the downgrading of the SA Embassy in Israel to send a strong message about Israel’s continued illegal occupation of Palestine and the continued human rights abuses against the peoples of Palestine."  Click here for more info.

ISRAELI INTERFERENCE, FALSIFICATION AND ATTACK ON SOUTH AFRICA AND THE ANC

There is a a falsification and mistruth being advocated by the Israeli lobby that the IR commission of the ANC National Policy Conference adopted the recommendation for a downgrade "contingent on a risk analysis” between now and December. This is simply untrue and is utterly incorrect, at best a lie and at worse can be viewed as an interference and meddling with internal processes.

In fact, a risk analysis between now and December could not have been adopted because this would be beyond the mandate and powers of the National Policy Conference. The NPC only makes recommendations to the December conference it cannot undertake investigations or other such actions between now and December.

In a statement released by the SA Jewish Board of Deputies (SAJBD) and SA Zionist Federation these two organizations go to the extent of suggesting that the ANC's Head of International Relations has said that they will be part of such a (non-existent) risk analysis investigation. They write: "In a conversation with SAJBD President Mary Kluk during the conference, Minister Edna Molewa ... assured Mary that the SAJBD would be consulted and be part of this investigation."

According to the press briefing by the ANC IR Commission Rapporteur, the idea of a risk analysis, investigation and impact study was indeed debated but at the end the final decision of the Commission, which was adopted by Plenary, was for the downgrade of the SA Embassy in Israel. We are confident that the commission report, once published, will accurately reflect these views.

The Israeli lobby and embassy has consistently proven to be against the South African government and its ruling party's support of the Palestinian people. In January this year, in an unprecedented attack, the Israeli embassy issued a statement defending opposition party leader Mmusi Maimane and attacking the ANC falsely accusing the party of being hateful and anti-semitic (click here to read the statement).
