Halt the logging and save the south east's koalas
The Nature Conservation Council, Conservation Council of the ACT Region, SERCA and two other conservation groups have called for Premier Kristina Keneally to intervene in the battle over the future of the last koala colony in the South East Forests of NSW.
Earlier this week local conservationists reported that contrary to assurances from the Environment Minister Frank Sartor, heavy machinery is already at work on the road network needed for access to the area.
Despite a recent Department of Environment, Climate Change and Water survey finding a small but healthy colony of koalas living in Mumbulla State Forest, logging is set to resume as early as next week.
Please send this email to Premier Keneally and Ministers Sartor and Macdonald urging them to halt logging and protect this precious koala colony.
There will be a public information meeting on logging in Mumbulla State Forest and the broader south east region at the Tathra Town Hall on Monday 8 March at 7pm.
The Shooters Party is at it again ... and now they're after our marine parks!
With its mission to open up NSW’s terrestrial national parks to hunting stalled, the Shooters Party is spearheading a call for a moratorium on marine parks off the NSW coast.
It’s hard to believe but Shooters Party leader Robert Brown is now chair of the Committee holding an inquiry into recreational fishing in NSW. The Committee under his leadership is responsible for looking at ‘sustainable’ fishing and marine parks, among other issues, and setting the direction for decision making on recreational fishing for decades to come.
We must send a clear message to the inquiry and our political leaders that we do not want any scale-back of ‘no-take’ areas, and we believe these areas must be increased without delay in order to provide better protection for marine biodiversity.
Have your say: please urgently send two cyberactions before Friday 19 March.

New coal-fired power stations for NSW an act of environmental negligence
We've strongly condemned the State Government's recent approval of plans for new gas or coal-fired power stations at Mt Piper and Bayswater as "environmental negligence".
Giving the green light to burn even more coal is a disaster for the climate, with the potential to increase NSW's carbon emissions by 15 per cent. Even fuelling these power stations by gas will increase the state's emissions by seven per cent.
Click here for our media release on the Government's disappointing announcement.
Read the article Power station plans spark pollution fears by Brian Robins (SMH, 04/03/2009) which also states that the NSW Government has plans to auction sites at Mount Piper and Bayswater for new power stations as part of its privatisation plan.

State Government backflip on Red Gum National Park decision
The NSW Government has reversed its decision for the immediate creation of new Red Gum National Parks along the Murray and other south-western rivers, recently announcing logging will continue in some areas for up to five years.
The move jeopardises the protection of globally significant wetlands and threatened species that are facing severe long-term threats to their survival.
The National Parks Association of NSW has indicated the decision will "not leave a forest worth protecting". (SMH, NSW to protect Riverina red gums, 02/03/10)
Read a joint media release from the Nature Conservation Council and six other environmental groups on the Red Gum National Park decision here.
