You can find me here...
...here..
...And this month you'll also find me sitting on the sea front with a small bag of chips and the beat of Morris drums pulsing through my veins.

It's the beat of the drum...

...then the jangle of bells, yes, but then stomping and yowling and a clashing of sticks much closer to a primal scream than a dainty dance. Faces painted black in memory of coal miners and rainbow rag jackets stitched by hand. Ah, how I'd like to do more than shake a stick at whichever cretins diluted the howling raw scrumpy of English folk song and dance into a weak and sugary apple juice.
After a more conventional summer of Latitude and Camp Bestival and so on, this gig is a bit 'full circle'. I grew up here at Sidmouth Folk Week and I've come back to teach Shooting Roots' first ever storytelling workshops. I'm incredibly proud of all the young storytellers who yesterday told for the first time at a 'grown up' story circle &, frankly, were better than any number of adults. Excellent stuff.
In a world of polished pop culture, I can't emphasise enough how important folk arts are. In the mainstream, we often see only the shiny products after months and years of backroom practice. Many young people feel they should immediately be as good as their idols, or not bother at all. But in folk cultures across the world, the sharing is more important than the star.
To sit around a fire at a true folk festival is a pleasure; everyone has something to contribute. Noone says "I'm not sexy / young / good enough". Ofcourse, you need work to get even better if you want proper gig bookings, but to get there, you have to find an accepting, uncynical environment to run the gauntlet of experimentation and imperfection - there's no way around it - and somewhere like Sidmouth is the perfect place for anyone to start.

Mini RRR in Blackmore Gardens, Sidmouth, practicing a few intimidating Shropshire Bedlam Morris moves.
