[Editor’s note: One of
our longer missives this time, but then Ma wrote this one, and if
you’ve ever spoken to her, you’ll understand why…I did
what I could…]
Hello Beeses’ followers
It’s summer but Ma is claiming that she’s SAD (Seasonal
Affective Disorder or Summer? ‘Ardly, Dude!). Despite
this, she’s cheered by you good people coming to see us anyway and
she thanks you all. On a much brighter note the garden looks
great. Clare, Beeses green fingered guru, is continuing to work
wonders for all to enjoy.
Apologies if this newsletter sounds like tales from the riverbank but
hey,
it really does happen.
Shock Horror - BEES come to Beeses
Beeses was visited by a swarm of honey bees who stayed overnight on their
way to looking for a new place to build a hive – how cool is that
[Ma never got to appear on Blue Peter, but this would have been her ideal
contribution – Soppiness Editor]. Luckily Ma and Pa
didn’t take the advice of the first ‘expert’ who said
it
was a wasps’ nest and the only way to get rid of it was to shoot it
down. Ma has a healthy appetite for risk but she draws the line at
mixing guns and alcohol! A second opinion revealed it was not a
wasps’ nest but a swarm of bees. Apiologists among you will
know that as the object in the picture is a rugby ball shape, the much
more experienced person Ma spoke to on the phone was correct in saying it
was a swarm of bees. Who knew?
All-weather partying
After listening to a strong business case, which was supported by a
persuasive slapping, Pa agreed with Ma that a marquee should be purchased
to give us more room and options for private parties etc. Pa
oversaw
its erection and mighty pleased he is too. Ma and Pa are looking
forward to catering for many more parties in the future – so
whatever the occasion, check out what we can do for you.
Conham Road Car Park
Good news for all those who get here from across the river: the Conham
Road car park is now open until 11:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday
nights. Ma and Pa would like to express their gratitude to South
Gloucestershire Council for allowing this. However, please note
this
is on a trial basis, and dependent on you lovely people not making a
racket
and upsetting the neighbours when you leave (upsetting us should be
enough
for you…). It’s the ideal way to get to us as you can
take a short stroll along the river to acquire/enhance your thirst, and
be
transported by our ferry to an oasis of countryside in the city.
Budding Photographers required
The Spirit of Brislington photographic competition is a very neat idea
and
the competition organisers are looking for photos that capture exactly
that. Ma has been posing in various parts of the garden with a Jack
Daniels and coke, and Pa has tried to explain she’s misunderstood
the idea but he’s not sure she gets it. If you have some
more,
er, tasteful photos taken at Beeses, and that paparazzi career
didn’t
really take off (has the exclusion order ended yet?), details for
entering
the competition can be found at http://www.reflexcc.org.uk/ .
Events at Beeses
The open mic night remains popular and entertaining as some seriously
good
musicians continue to show up and wow us with their skills. Pa has
become adept at twiddling his knobs and ensuring the sound is spot
on. So you get two doses of choons at Beeses this week, with Gypie
& Chuck on Wednesday, and open mic night on Thursday.
And don’t forget that every Wednesday it’s the
inflation-proof
curry, beer and music night (or music, beer and curry, whichever you
prefer). It’s delicious and groovy at the same time, just the
way we like it here and all for a fiver. And you get to see an
ex-Feelgood!
Professor Beeses Quiz is also a regular monthly feature (the next one is
on Tuesday) and being the fountain of knowledge and trivia facts that he
is, we continue to be amazed and irritated (but mostly
entertained).
Come and join in and pit yourself against the Prof.
August Bank Holiday Sunday – don’t forget we are open until
11:00 on this Sunday and Pa has organised some music for all you
groovemiesters.
Beeses 2nd Annual Beer Festival: Friday 13 - 15 September 2007
All together now (say it out loud):
B double E double R - U - N
Beer run, beer run!
This must mean its Beeses 2nd Annual Beer festival – oh yes.
We’re planning to have around twelve beers and ciders, live music
and good, home-cooked, beer-absorbing food. We have decided to sell
tickets in advance this year (£3 per day or £6 for a three
day
pass). Half of the proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to
the
Friends of Eastwood
Farm
and Friends of Troopers
Hill
groups. They are volunteers who work hard to keep areas on both
sides of the river near to Beeses a beautiful space for wildlife to
thrive
and people to enjoy.
Ma and Pa’s first anniversary
Well, doesn’t time fly when you’re working all the hours God
sends! Come August it will be a year since Ma started wielding the
new broom, and it fair brings a tear to her eye. We’d like
you
to come and celebrate with us on Saturday 18 August. Pa will sort
some tunes and Ma will bake a pie or some such and you good folk just
need
to come on down and raise a glass with us (which incidentally for your
first drink will be buy-one-get-one-free - this offer is subject to any
unreasonable objections we devise, so you’d better have that cider,
Guinness, Cointreau and Baileys cocktail somewhere else).
More drinking news
Since we’ve opened, we’ve been regularly serving beers from
Bath Ales, Butcombe and Wickwar, but we’re going to start getting
more adventurous. Not only have we located a distributor, but
we’re now dealing directly with some of the smaller
breweries.
We’ll shortly be serving Butts’ Barbus barbus
with one of Hidden
Brewery’s ales and Felinfoel’s Double
Dragon following hard on its heels.
We’ll continue to serve Gem, Butcombe Bitter and BOB regularly, but
we also want to be able to serve more than one ale at a time, so
we’ll be expanding our range as we grow.
All of which means that our entry in this year’s edition of
Venue’s Drinking Out West (“Revamped, refreshed, but still
the
most unique and picturesque alfresco drinking and eating experience
thanks
to its incredible location”) is very welcome!
We’d like
to finish this
newsletter by saying thanks for all your support so far, but do keep it
up as we have half a season left to go! Good bye until next time Beesers.
