6^th District Elementary hosted the Covington Summer Youth Program for children in 1^st-5^th grades.  Their Service Learning activities centered around the theme of “Active Locally, Learn Globally.”  Guest speakers presented around the issues of growing healthy foods through community gardens; using healthy locally grown foods, nutrition & cooking; local action to reduce, reuse and recycle; and art in the garden to beautify the world.  Camp participants were active in several Service Learning projects throughout the summer:

 

Art in the Garden: Children created mosaic clay pots and stepping stones for placement in the Randolph Park Community Garden, 6th District School, and Chalk Restaurant. 

 

Community Gardening: Children planted flowers and vegetables in the Randolph Park Community Garden.  Chef Mark Bodenstein from Chalk spoke to the camp about healthy eating, bringing delicious farm produce to share.

 

CSI Recycling School Clean Up: Children cleaned up trash and recyclables around 6^th District Elementary.  Tony Thomas from CSI Recycling led the kids in a relay race to separate the trash from the items to be recycled.
