Youth Ministry Deja Vu

Youth
Ministry Deja Vu"Youth Ministry Deja Vu" (article)
by Ryan C. Nielsen

"When I started out in youth ministry seventeen years ago, there were few books to help guide new youth pastors. In fact, I often find myself feeling jealous that those entering youth ministry today have so many resources available to them...

About eight months ago, God called me to a new church in a new state to be their new youth pastor. My last "new" position was nine years ago, so it had been a long time since I experienced the joys, struggles, challenges, blessings, and all that comes with being the "new guy."

After seventeen years, it's tempting to feel like I've got youth-ministry all figured out. But moving to a new ministry position brings with it all the same challenges as when one first begins. After a couple of months, I pulled out my copy of Your First Two Years and re-read it. It was incredibly encouraging. I was struggling with the ministry transitions and feeling so alone and confused about what I was doing wrong after years of feeling like I was doing things right..."

Married to a Youth Pastor Blog

Married to a
youth pastor"Married to a Youth Pastor" Blog

In March, 2008, Amanda Maguire started a new blog titled, "Married to a Youth Pastor." This is an incredible blog filled with laughter, ideas, struggles, suggestions, sharing, and so much more. It is an incredible encouragement to those who are spouses of individuals working in Youth Ministry (thus, the name - "Married to a Youth Pastor"). I thought it would be best to share about this blog in the words or Amanda herself, when she first started this new blog...

To Quote:
"No, I didn’t think this through! Had I made a pro/con list, there is a good likely hood it wouldn’t have happened (sort of sarcastic). I was in full time ministry for a few years before we got married, so I kinda knew what I was in for. We got married and someone had to get a real job…me.

Then we started having kids, Dylan 4, Molly 2, and baby #3 on the way (due in September). So my ministry journey has been a roller coaster, but whose ministry journey isn’t? This is a crazy business being married to a youth pastor. Luckily, I have some wonderful mentors and friends who are on a similar journey and a great sense of humor. Because if you can’t laugh at your husband and your church…you will go nuts!

My hope for this blog is that it be a place for youth pastors’ wives to visit and laugh, and relate to these entries. I would love for this to become a little community where we can encourage each other through comments and even emails. I also pray that this would be a tool for us to learn from others who are on the same journey even though our stories are so different. I am not an expert but I am passionate about our calling. We are stretched much further than most know and are much stronger than we give ourselves credit for."

Make sure to stop by and visit, "Married to a Youth Pastor" and encourage others who would be blessed by this blog to stop by as well. It is a wonderful resources and community that Amanda has made available to everyone.
