Hello
you
bronzed Beesers
People often say to me: “Pa - how do you maintain your youthful
good
looks, cheery disposition and prodigious ability on the King of
Instruments
that is the bass guitar?” (They sometimes also ask “why
are you limping like that?”, but a glance at Ma marching away usually provides the
answer...).
I often ponder this question. Could it be that I surround myself
with beautiful young women day in and day out?
Could it be an undimmed ability to rock out at the drop of a powerchord? Or is
it that
life at Beeses simply couldn’t get much better?
There are many answers to this question, but the one I’m giving at
the moment is that the second Beeses Beer Festival is almost upon
us! Twelve ales, four ciders and a bunch of good music will be
available each and every day from Friday 14 September until Sunday 16
September. Three days of festivities dedicated to the stuff that
helped make this country the binge drinking capital of Europe (did I just
say that out loud?).
Anyway, this short(-ish) e-mail isn’t only intended to remind you
about stuff you should already be planning for, as we have a couple of
fresh news items. Firstly, we have completed the music programme by
securing the mighty talents of Gypie Mayo and Pete Gage to close the
festival on Sunday afternoon. Both Gypie and Pete spent time
playing
with Dr
Feelgood, and together they rocked up our Easter Sunday earlier this
year, much to the delight of the cream tea crowd. You can expect
some raucous boogie-woogie piano and rhythm’n’blues, and
anyone who has seen Gypie straining at the leash on the Wednesday night
residency he shares with Chuck McQuillan will see another side to his
playing.
The other piece of news is that our friends at The
Bristol Ferry Boat Co. are running a trip to the beer festival from
the
city centre on Saturday 15 September. Call 0117 927 3416 for
bookings
and further details.
In non-beer festival related news, the next open mic night is a week
earlier than its normal slot, as the high tides are starting again and
with a fair number of people using the ferry we want make sure everyone
can make it. It will take place on Thursday 6 September from 8:30
p.m., and as usual it will be a spontaneous affair. Last time we
had
a mixed cast of regular and new acts, and amongst the latter was Kerry
who
played a couple of her own songs and then upon request delivered a great
version of Joni Mitchell’s Big Yellow Taxi. We’re
incredibly lucky to have such a diverse range of high quality talent
playing at Beeses, and we’re now developing a regular audience for
the open mic nights. There will probably be another one in October,
but that will be it until next Spring, so don’t miss out!
I hear Ma calling, so I’d better see which of her corns need filing
pretty damn quick or there’ll be heel to pay (geddit?). Come
and help me drink all this beer I’ve ordered, or things will get
rather messy (and I’m not talking about my own attempts at sampling
each and every one). Call us about tickets. You know where we
are!
PS: many thanks are due to the Bristol Ferry Boat Co. and Messing About on The River who helped out when the Beeses
ferry was stolen a couple of weeks ago. Thanks also go to Paul, who
signed up for this drivel and informed us that it was tied up outside
Netham Lock!
I’ll see you at the bar...
