Senate rightly rejects weak CPRS Bill, now government must strengthen targets
The Nature Conservation Council the Senate's rejection of the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme (CPRS) Bill. We're now urging the Government to go back to the drawing board to strengthen the proposed system and targets.
In its current form, the CPRS would lock in the dirty, fossil fuel-based economy and guarantee failure to stop climate change reaching dangerous tipping points.
The five per cent unconditional emission reduction target is far too low. As one of the highest per capita emitters of climate pollution, Australia should be planning to cut our emissions by 50 per cent by 2020 (on 1990 levels).

Sydney premiere of climate change documentary, The Age of Stupid
The Age of Stupid is a 90-minute film about climate change, set in the future.
Oscar-nominated Pete Postlethwaite stars as a man living alone in the devasted world of 2055, looking back at 'archive' footage from 2007 and asking: why didn’t we stop climate change when we had the chance?
On Wednesday 19th August, A-list celebs will join members of the public at the Sydney Theatre for the film's Australian premiere. Guests will arrive by bicycle, solar car, rickshaw, feet, horse or electric car, before braving the cameras on the green carpet. Meanwhile, about 10,000 people will be watching the events unfold live at more than 40 local cinemas.
Tickets for the Sydney premiere are on sale now at http://www.sydneytheatre.org.au/event.asp?pID=188 or by calling the Sydney Theatre Box Office on (02) 9250 1999. Read more ...
