Take the No New Coal message to the streets
Protest against proposed coal fired power stations
7am sharp. Tuesday 6 July 2010
Sydney CBD
Meet at Martin Place between Elizabeth and Phillip Streets, then proceed to various intersections and outside train stations in the CBD In coming weeks, NSW Cabinet will be asked to consider a proposal for a moratorium on new coal-fired power stations in the state.
We need to show Premier Kristina Keneally and her Cabinet that the community supports an end to polluting coal power and a just transition to a clean energy future.
Join the Nature Conservation Council of NSW and Greenpeace for a vibrant street action, holding No New Coal signs up at prominent intersections and outside major train stations in the CBD.

Marine ecosystems threatened by five year freeze on marine parks
The NSW Shooters Party has introduced a Bill to place a five year moratorium on the creation of new marine parks and new sanctuary areas within existing marine parks. The Labor Party has offered their in principle support for the moratorium, as long as it excludes changes to the zoning plans for Solitary Islands and Jervis Bay marine parks.
This proposal displays a clear disregard for the scientific evidence of more than 300 international papers that marine parks, particularly no-take or sanctuary zones, are a vital tool for marine conservation.
Debate on the Bill has been delayed until 31 August, so we must act now to ensure our marine plants and animals have safe havens, and that our threatened and overfished species have a chance to recover.

It's time for a national container deposit system
On Monday, Federal and state environment ministers will meet to decide if they'll take the next crucial step for a national container deposit system (CDS) - commissioning a regulatory impact statement (RIS).
Boomerang Alliance research shows that a national CDS would increase recycling rates to 80 per cent and reduce the cost of managing waste containers by $84 million. A Clean Up Australia survey last year found 88 per cent of people support the introduction of a 10 cent refund for drink cans and bottles.
Let Federal Environment Minister Peter Garrett and NSW Environment Minister Frank Sartor know you support the immediate introduction of an effective national container deposit scheme by sending this cyberaction.

Member group news: Mine plans expose cracks in BioBanking scheme
The conservation value of the very first BioBanking site in NSW has been called into question following plans for intensive mining under the Douglas Park site by BHP-Billiton.
“If the intensive underground coal mining proceeds it will cause surface subsidence of over a metre at the BioBanking site, perhaps resulting in a loss of surface and ground waters, and that could affect the habitat of the endangered plants and animals”, said Colong Foundation for Wilderness director Keith Muir.
“The conservation versus coal mining conflict should have eliminated the St Marys Towers site. The mining proposal could adversely impact of the heritage values, but the BioBanking regime does not incorporate a “Bio-depreciation” factor for subsurface coal mining.”
