No New Coal campaign asks political leaders to stop being fossil fools

Coal Rally No New Coal Rally
1pm, Thursday 25 February
Outside State Parliament on Macquarie Street, Sydney

If you believe it is important to phase out coal and switch to clean energy, then please come along to the rally outside State Parliament on Macquarie Street Sydney at 1pm Thursday 25 February.

We'll be launching the No New Coal campaign,
a combination of climate action groups and environmental organisations who want a plan to phase out coal and make NSW the clean energy state.

We will be calling on all parties in the State Parliament to commit to phasing out the use of coal due to its massive impact on the climate. Activists have been gathering signatures on a No New Coal petition, and this will be tabled in Parliament on 25 February.

Koalas in the Bega Valley
By Conservation Council of ACT Region President John Hibberd

Koala There were once, 100 years ago, hundreds of thousands of koalas in the Bega Valley.  They were so numerous that you could even see them in the trees along Bega’s main street!  Hunting for the fur trade, habitat loss through extensive clearing, and fire have all decimated that once vast population.

Now all we know for sure that is left is a tiny remnant clinging on in Mumbulla State Forest, with a few scattered individuals possibly elsewhere. And this is what they are going to log and burn.  Recent DECCW surveys have shown that this population is slowly recovering, and may now number up to 50 individuals.  Studies of tree species preferred by Mumbulla koalas have shown that species diversity appears to be important for them.

Surprisingly, given this population’s small size, DNA analysis by Sydney University has shown that Mumbulla koalas are genetically strong, and thus potentially able to increase their numbers without some of the inbreeding problems that have affected other disjunct koala populations.

Powerful Owl and other rare creatures in the path of Bulahdelah bypass

Bulahdelah bypassConcerns continue about the impact on the environment of the Roads and Traffic Authority's choice of route for the Bulahdelah highway bypass.

The Bulahdelah bypass blog outlines how using part of the Alum Mountain for the new section of highway, despite the existence of alternative routes, could threaten a range of wildlife including the Powerful Owl, squirrel gliders, microbats and several rare species of native orchids.

Local activists report hearing two species of Powerful Owl in the area earlier this month, one in the Alum Mountain Park area and another further to the south.

Please take the time to find out more about the bypass and its impact at these two Facebook groups:
