How are you planning to celebrate world food day ( Thursday October 16th)? Here are some great ideas:
FOOD ON FIRE: GLOBAL FOOD EQUITY
Toronto's tradition of annual events to respond to the challenges of World Food Day takes it up a notch this year with a day of varied activities at University of Toronto on October 17, 2008, co-sponsored by the Equity Studies Program, the Toronto Food Policy Council and others.
The day starts at 9:00 am with a series of workshops inspired by a hot new workshop style that started in Japan. Since articles are readily available via e-mail and the Internet, the new purpose of workshops is to allow people to engage, not just receive information.
Provocateurs, including some of Toronto's leading food advocates and experts, go boldly into the world of ideas where none have gone before, and workshop members are encouraged to respond in kind. This will be the Canadian premiere of this format for small group discussion. Register early for your top choices at the website highlighted below.
In the afternoon, there will be a presentation and discussion on this year's World Food Day theme: climate change, bio-fuels and food security. Darrin Qualman, a brilliant researcher working with the National Farmers Union, will make the case against grain ethanol. A panel of three will amplify, challenge and debate his view.
All through the day, there will be book displays and displays of student photo-voice projects prepared especially for World Food Day. The event will be closed at 4:00 PM by Toronto Councillor Gord Perks, one of the early people in the city to campaign against the causes of global warming.
All in all, it promises to be a stimulating day of new ideas, as well as the best food networking event of the fall season.

FARMERS GROWING FARMERS
BUSINESS PLANNING
COURSE
Interested in starting a farming based business? A small market garden, livestock operation, urban farming… part time, full time, the possibilities are endless!
Farmers Growing Farmers is a new multi-year program that supports new farmers who are pursuing sustainable, near-urban, direct-to-market farm based enterprises. Through a wide range of services, FGF helps new farmers plan, start-up and establish successful farm businesses.
“A business plan is an essential tool that can turn your dreams into reality.”
Through the nine
sessions of the Farm Business Planning course you will tackle everything
from goal setting to developing strategies in marketing, production and
finances. Aimed at getting new farmers on their feet and
moving, sessions are full of presentations by farmers and local food
specialists. With hard work, great ideas and assistance from farmers,
participants will have created a complete business plan by the end of the
course. Farmers Growing Farmers (FGF) is aimed at those who intend to start
their own farm enterprise within the next two
years.
The business course is one component of the Farmers Growing Farmers program. We offer a wide range of services and support for new and transitioning farmers: one-on-one mentoring with experienced farmers, help in locating land, an opportunity to attain start-up financing and an on-going New Farmer Network!
Did you make less then $45,000 in 2007, if so you are eligible to apply for a placement gift of up to $4000 for start up costs and 30 hours of mentorship from farmers of your choice.
Recipients of the gift ‘pass-on’ the equivalent value of the gift through giving a combination of seeds, compost, livestock and services to other farmers and your local farm community. More details on our website.
We are now accepting applications for our Farm Business Planning Course, based in Toronto and running for 9 sessions from October 25th – March 22nd.
