August 31, 2009 SPECIAL BAJAINSIDER TROPICAL WEATHER UPDATE
AT 9PM THE GOVERNMENT OF MEXICO
HAS AMENDED HURRICANE WARNINGS AND WATCHES HURRICANE JIMENA IS A DANGEROUS CATEGORY 4 HURRICANE FORECAST TO MOVE ALONG THE PACIFIC COAST OF BAJA SUR ON TUESDAY AND MAKE LANDFALL AS A MAJOR HURRICANE WEDNESDAY. PREPARATIONS FOR HURRICANE CONDITIONS SHOULD BE RUSHED TO COMPLETION IN WARNING AREAS. Dear Baja Insider Subscriber: Hurricane Jimena is just short of becoming a Category 5 Hurricane. The Eastern Pacific has 3 or 4 Major Hurricanes (Category 3 or greater) per year, most of them move west into the Pacific. Baja has not seen the landfall of a Major Hurricane since 1989, with Category 3 Hurricane Kiko. Category 5 Hurricanes are very rare in our basin. Major Hurricanes are a whole new ballgame. Conversely, last year's Hurricane Norbert was also forecast to make landfall as a Major Hurricane and did so as a Category 2. Don't discount the potential of this storm while you calmly make preparations for storm conditions. Keep your head, stay safe and remember that material goods can be replaced. Here is the 9PM release from the National Hurricane Center and the Mexican Government:
JIMENA IS EXPECTED TO PRODUCE TOTAL RAIN ACCUMULATIONS OF 5 TO 10 INCHES OVER THE SOUTHERN HALF OF THE BAJA CALIFORNIA PENINSULA AND PORTIONS OF WESTERN MEXICO DURING THE NEXT 2 DAYS...WITH POSSIBLE ISOLATED MAXIMUM AMOUNTS OF 15 INCHES.
This could end up being one of the most powerful, if not the most powerful storm to impact Baja. Even if you have endured previous Baja Hurricane Seasons, this may be like nothing you have witness before. Should Jimena remain a Major Hurricane the damage will be far more severe (click here) than previous storms We advise our readers in the projected path of this storm to take preparation seriously and consider evacuation from 50 miles each side of the direct storm path, should this storm remain a Major Hurricane as anticipated. Persons along Pacific Coastal areas and areas prone to flooding should seriously consider evacuation 4-6hrs in advance of the storm. We will continue to provide updates to the BajaInsider as they are released from the NHC, we may even get you some video... as long as the internet connection holds out! The
