The Choir Room  Back To School! August 2010
Gearing up to head back to class...
With just four weeks to the start of the new school year, it's time to start planning for the fall. Whether you're just starting out as a conductor, or have years of experience, we can help you find the perfect music for your students, and a few tips and tricks to make your life easier.

New from Lorenz: Conducting Choirs series
Beginning from the basics of how to move your hands (and why!) and exploring the conductor's craft from the inside out, these three books are a fabulous resource for someone new to conducting or any conductor who might want a few tips and tricks from the pros to improve their own practice and style.
Best-seller from Doreen Rao: Circle of Sound
A series of exercises designed to help connect sound to a sense of presence in the body. Using movements and breathing exercises from Eastern traditions (primarily tai chi), this book mixes movement and music into an experience that transcends both. (Written with Bill Perison)
Best Seller from Earlene Rentz: From Concepts to Concerts
This book helps you manage your rehearsal time effectively, and teach students fundamental concepts about music theory and performance practice while in the rehearsal setting. With a focus on teaching in broad strokes that can then be applied to any piece of repertoire, this book is an invaluable resource for the instructor/director with limited time but a desire to teach 'more than what is on the page'.
New 2010 Back To School Octavo Section....
We've put all of our 2010 school octavos into one convenient spot for you to browse. Hal Leonard, Heritage, Lorenz, Santa Barbara, Roger Dean - all in one place.

Most of the titles have an audio sample, a score sample, or both! New titles being added every week. Find a few new favorites as you choose your repertoire:
Nurturing The Musical Classroom...
We have tons of resources for the music teacher. Games and puzzles are a very effective way to teach music theory, and keep your students engaged. Physical activity helps them embody the lesson so they recall it easier next time.

Selected In-Stock Classroom Resources:
If you're looking for a more in-depth teaching method for classroom use, check out Fun with Composers by Canadian author Debbie Ziolkoski, complete with games, puzzles, exercises, workshops, reproducible pages, and CD accompaniment.

Fun With Composers:
Orff methodology is an increasingly popular way to teach children about rhythym, music and sound. By using simple, brightly colored instruments (each color is a pitch, providing a visual reference) and lots of activity, including body percussion, teachers can help students embody the knowledge of how music works.

Selected In-Stock Orff Resources:

November is approaching quickly, and with it assemblies, presentations, memorial services and other ways to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice (and those who still stand on the front lines). Traditional Remembrance Day Titles:
  •  In Flanders' Fields (Tilley) SATB or 2-Pt

Titles about Peace:
Sacred Suggestions for the Soloist...
Whether you're a vocal soloist, a pianist, or the church specialist on the clarinet, here's a few more suggestions to round out your repertoire. We particularly like the new Lo How A Rose, a great new collection for piano and C or Bb instrument for the Christmas season from John Carter.
Loonie Tunes
