Hi all

Despite winter seeming to have returned with a vengeance, the sun is out and making us all look forward to what will hopefully be a gorgeous summer.  What better way to spend an summer evening after work sipping on a cool pint of ale or ice-laden long drink by the river?  Well, after Easter weekend, that’s exactly what you'll be able to do, but more of that later...there’s loads to tell you this month.

Ale of the week
This weekend it’s a welcome return for Wickwar Brewing Company’s award-winning BOB (Brand Oak Bitter), which we haven’t had on at Beeses for a while.  With its distinct blend of hops, malt & citrus fruits, this classic ale was one of the most popular ales at last year’s Beeses beer festival (talking of which, you can read the local CAMRA branch review of our 2006 beer festival on their web site; it’s on page 8).  So if you want to escape the baying hordes watching Ingerlund through their fingers on Saturday, you’ll find a calm retreat at Beeses, where you can buy a pint of BOB at pre-Budget prices.

Beeses Music Club
This Sunday (25 March) Gypie Mayo will be bringing someone else who has entertained us at Beeses in the past: Sebastian from the Zen Hussies.  If it’s anything like last time, there won’t be much singing, but there will be plenty of classy six-string action, with slide on both acoustic and electric, and a fair bit of blues, a twist of jazz and a shake of country.  Mmmm, nice...

Easter weekend
We are launching our summer opening hours from Good Friday (6 April) in style by hosting a weekend of live music.  Beeses will be open every day of the Easter weekend from 12:00 p.m. The music line up starts with Eddie Martin (Bristol blues hero) on Friday afternoon, continuing with Rattlesnake Shake (rockin’ rhythm and blues) on Saturday evening, Gypie Mayo and Pete Gage (both ex-Dr Feelgood) on Sunday afternoon and finishing with Andy Couzens (the human jukebox) on Monday afternoon.

The new Beeses menu will also be launched, offering a good choice at reasonable prices, and largely sourced from local providers. It includes free range chicken and locally reared beef steaks, cheeseboards with local cheeses and a tasty tapas menu.

After Easter, we’ll be opening at 4:00 p.m. Tuesday to Thursday, and from 12:00 Friday to Sunday (and Bank Holidays), so you’ll be able to snack on some of Ma Beeses’ tasty comestibles after work (quiet at the back...).

We’ve got an advert running in Venue magazine for three weeks (starting this week), and as part of our marketing we are running a ‘buy one meal, get one free’ voucher deal.  So pick up a copy of Venue to take advantage of this offer.

Easter weekend will also see the start of the regular ferry runs from the city centre.  The Bristol Packet will be running the Tower Belle every Sunday until mid-September, and on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays during school holidays.

Building works and garden alterations
These activities continue apace; the propsect of being found face-down in Netham Lock has clearly had a motivating effect on our team, and our deck is looking good to be ready in time for Easter.  As you can see from the picture below, Ma has been wielding the credit card in the direction of anyone prepared to do battle with her formidable haggling skills, and so she is now the proud owner of some new garden furniture.  She’s particularly pleased with the ‘boat bench’, as are the Beeses hounds, Tess and Tweed!

The River Princess
The River Princess is Messing About On The River’s flagship, and this year she celebrates her 70th birthday.  On Saturday 14 April, the old girl will be visiting Beeses as part of her birthday celebrations, when the crew and passengers will be wearing 1930s-period dress, as will Ma and Pa Beese.  The local press will be in attendance, and there will be prizes for the best period costume, which is open to Beeses customers as well, so dig out granny’s flapper dress and ostrich feathers now!

OK, we must go as our esteemed workforce have stopped for ANOTHER tea break, and Ma feels a whuppin’ coming on...hopefully we’ll see you soon.
