September Featured Composer: Joel Raney
|
Joel Raney is probably best known as one of the driving forces behind the editorial team at Hope Publishing. Born in the early fifties in Alabama, he was already playing the piano at three and discovering a deep love for hymns and gospel music.
He studied piano and organ at the University of North Alabama, and later received his Master of Music degree from the Juilliard School of Music in piano performance. Joel resides in River Forest, IL, with his wife, Susie, and their three sons, Charlie, Sawyer and Jesse.
Joel's career in music began in the Southern Baptist Church, but also includes work in New York City, Los Angeles and Chicago in both theater and jazz performance. He currently makes his living writing and arranging music for radio and television commercials in his own Chicago-based production company and studio, CATFISH. Joel serves as Worship Pianist at the First Presbyterian Church of River Forest, IL.
Part of what we love about Joel's work is his passion, which shows in every note. He is a master of taking a deceptively simple line and creating something inspiring and catchy from it, but still accessible.
One of his newest pieces for this fall is Walk By Faith (SATB). Listen to this YouTube clip of him talking about the inspiration for the song and see what we mean:
We have a huge selection of Joel's music in the Hope catalogue, in stock and ready for delivery from our warehouse. Here are some of our other favorites:

The Song of Prayer (A Practical Guide to Learning Gregorian Chant):
This book is very well written, with lots of history and step by step explanations of how the tone modalities work, and the CD is a great resource for the beginner. (Note: Only teaches the service of Compline. Latin / English blended service)
A Practical Approach to Improvisation for the Church Organist:
Lau takes the myth that hymn improvisations have to be elaborate and complex, and turns it on its ear, showing several step by step hands-on examples for simple but beautiful improvisations that will help build your confidence. This caffineated ode to romance behind the cappucino machine was an integral part of the four-star Winnipeg Fringe play "StarBachs", put on by Manitoba's own Naomi Forman Productions to rave reviews. Available in the Goldrich and Heisler Songbook, Volume 1, this one is for all of us who don't function without that first fresh cup in the morning. (Performed here by Kristen Chenoweth.)
