Where can I recycle Styrofoam?
Styrofoam or "expanded polystyrene foam" is commonly used in packaging and construction. It's light, absorbs impact and is relatively cheap to manufacture. It is a challenging material to recycle. For a video that explains one method of recycling styrofam check out how London Drugs and Genesis Recyling are making a difference click here.

If you have styrofoam to recycle here a few options in the Vancouver area:

1. Mansonville Plastics: They accept clean blocks of styrofoam (packaging material/no food residue). They accept clean blocks of white packaging polystyrene. Must be dropped off in clear plastic bags and please call before dropping off. The best part is that they don't disclose the location until you call, it's kind of like a secret recycling rendevous, how exciting! (604) 534-8626

2. Genesis Recycling: The same recycler that London Drugs uses to process their styrofoam. It's always a good idea to call ahead to confirm the details. They can be reached at 604-607-1117, cost is approximately $3 per garbage bag.

3. Pacific Mobile Depots: This reycler operates mobile depots that come to a parking lot near you on a monthly basis. They also offer commercial pick up and recycle a huge variety of plastics and other hard to recycle items. Check their website for schedule info, etc.

There are other options depending on where you live. For example the Gibson's Recycling Depot is one of the first in Canada to recycle styrofoam, see this link for details on their program.

Go Solar: Power to compact!

Often we are asked to advise on garbage compactor purchasing and leasing. For new installs or for a client who has increasing waste generation one of the considerations is the availability of power. Until recently most garbage compactors required 3 phase power which can be expensive to install.  New innovations in the compactor market are coming and one of the new options is a solar powered compactor.
That's right you can use the power of the sun to compact your waste. Less trips by the big old garbage truck and you're not using power from the grid to make it happen.

Check out some of the options here:

Marathon: A leader in compactors, their unit has been on the market for a few years.

Big Belly: Not a commercial, large volume compactor but still an innovative use of solar powered compaction.

Recycling Perks: The Carrot Instead of The Stick:

I'd like to use my Recyle Miles for this purchase - We know that we are supposed to try to reduce, reuse and recyle as much as possible. But do you ever feel like recycling is just a bit of a chore? What if recycling was fun and you got a tangible reward? There a few new programs that now are rewarding people who recycle with points, merchandise, etc. We won't get into the debate about encouraging more consumption by recycling...These programs do offer food for thought as we move towards a "closed loop economy".

Recyclebank: This program has been rolled out in many cities in the United States. It offers a wide variety of rewards and has some pretty compelling statistics when it comes to increasing diversion rates.

Recycle Perks: A new kid on the block that is looking to expand on the Recyclebank model.

Couple Collects Recycling To Go On Honeymoon: This story is about a couple from the UK that collected and redeemed enough recyclables at their local Tesco to go on a honeymoon. And they flew business class, not bad for two bottle collectors!
