Take part in a Climate Conversation
In the next month, the Nature Conservation Council will launch an exciting, new campaign - Climate Conversations. This campaign aims to engage and activate everyday Australians on climate change to build public pressure for stronger and more effective policies. We will provide you with all the resources you need to start climate conversations in your community.
You can help build a strong grassroots movement for climate action. For more information and to get involved, register your support at www.climateconversation.org.au
Every conversation will count!
Turn the tide and show your support for marine parks
Leader of the NSW Nationals, Andrew Stoner, and Shadow Minister for Industry, Duncan Gay, have launched a campaign to stop the creation of more marine parks in NSW. They say the NSW Government has spent taxpayers’ money on setting up Marine Parks which Mr Stoner and Mr Gay claim “are based on politics, not science”.
The Nature Conservation Council believes Marine Parks, particularly no-take or Sanctuary Zones, are a vital tool for marine conservation as evidenced by a large number of scientific papers. To argue otherwise demonstrates a clear lack of understanding of marine science – of particular concern given Mr Gay holds the non-medical science portfolio for the Coalition.
Not only have two prominent NSW Nationals leaders urged a moratorium on new Marine Parks, but the Shooters’ Party has signalled its intention to amend the Marine Parks Act to impose a five-year moratorium on declaring any more marine parks or the expansion of sanctuary zones with existing marine parks.
Send a cyberaction to NSW Premier Nathan Rees, Environment Minister John Robertson and Primary Industries Minister Ian Macdonald expressing your support for expanding, not stopping, marine parks and sanctuaries. Click here to have your say.

Highly evolved species may not adapt to climate change
Some tropical climate species may be unable to adapt to climate change and are therefore at an increased risk of extinction, according to research conducted by Monash and Melbourne universities.
The study found plants and animals that are are highly specialised may have a low genetic diversity that does not allow adaptation to future climate changes. The findings further highlight the importance of limiting human-induced global warming and taking urgent steps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Read more ...
