More than 350 people attend Public Meeting on Shooters' Bill in Pymble
A public meeting attended by about 350 people in Pymble on Tuesday night overwhelmingly supported a motion urging Premier Nathan Rees to ensure the Shooters’ Party’s Game and Feral Animal Control Amendment Bill is voted down.
The meeting heard from all sides of the debate, including from the Invasive Species Council's Dr Carol Booth, Shadow Minister for Climate Change and the Environment Catherine Cusack, Greens NSW MP Lee Rhiannon and Shooters' Party MLC Robert Brown.
Opposition to the Bill is growing with widespread concerns about allowing recreational hunters into National Parks, proposals for duck hunting and the creation of game reserves in NSW. More than 500 people have attended public meetings across NSW and thousands have signed petitions urging the NSW Government to reject the entire bill.
The Parks and Native Animal Protection Coaltion has emailed every NSW MP highlighting how the level of opposition demonstrated through the public meetings and petitions (outlined above) clearly shows this legislation has outraged not only environment and animal welfare organisations, but a broad cross section of the wider community.
An urgent rally will be held on Tuesday 1 September to continue the strong message to the NSW Government that the community is joining with the Parks and Native Animal Protection Coalition in asking for:
• No Hunting in National Parks;
• No game reserves;
• No hunting native animals; and
• No release of exotic birds for hunting.
Meet at 11am outside Parliament House in Macquarie Street.
Bring placards, tell your friends, be there!

Shooting flying-foxes or netting orchards?

The NSW Government has released the Flying-fox Review Panel Report which states that
shooting flying-foxes:
• is not acceptable ethically or legally;
• contributes to the decline of the grey-headed flying-fox population;
• is ineffective when large numbers visit orchards; and
• orchardists could rely on netting to protect their crops.
The report recommends that government subsidises farmers to protect their crops with netting and that shooting be phased out. Until May 2011, people licenced to shoot flying-foxes must comply with a Department of Primary Industry Code of Practice.
The full report can be downloaded at:

You can view the NSW Environent Minister ‘s media release

The NSW Government has received strong, clear recommendations from the Review Panel but has only announced that it will commission an economic analysis.
The Nature Conservation Council supports financial incentives for fruit growers to protect their crops with full exclusion netting. We're seeking a statement from the NSW Government giving the date when licences to shoot flying-foxes for fruit crop protection will cease.
The Nature Conservation Council supports immediate action by the NSW Government so that netting can be installed during this summer so that fewer flying-foxes are killed and the young of lactating females do not die slowly of starvation and dehydration. Would you allow that to happen to domestic pets?
