Last Dinner Report-26th May 2010
by Liz Rickman, Secretary.
We had a great turn out for our Autumn dinner despite the rain, and thank you to all of those who ventured out on such a night. Louella McCarthy, Senior Lecturer in School of Medicine at University of Western Sydney gave a historical overview of medical women in NSW from 1880 to 1939. Her talk titled “Uncommon Practices” highlighted the issues faced by women entering and doing medicine during this period. Informal discussion afterwards
suggested that there were some areas of medicine that are still problematic for women graduates. MWS of NSW through The Australian Federation of Medical Women historically and currently is committed to an awareness and action on such issues.
    The
only male!
Louella McCarthy
The food was delicious and many thanks to our sponsors AMA and Investec Experien
Future dinner meetings will be on 25th August and 24th November.
We look forward to seeing you there.

MWS NSW Mentoring Program Launch
Tues 26th October 2010
Ground floor
- AMA House 69 Christie Street, St.Leonards. Time: 6.30pm - 9.30pm
Are you a medical student or junior doctor seeking a mentor?
Or perhaps you are a doctor who is keen to support medical students & junior doctors to help them navigate the medical world
We are launching a new mentoring program and we are seeking mentors and mentees.
The program will pair each doctor mentor with a medical student or junior doctor mentee, based on the preferences indicated by both parties.
The program will be facilitated by medical doctor & professional mentor Dr Alice Killen.
We currently have many more mentees than mentors and we would love to be able to provide a mentor for all our young doctors and medical students who are seeking mentors, so we would like to encourage as many doctors as possible to be involved as mentors.
We will provide mentoring training and resources for mentors, as well as support with the option for mentors to meet regularly with each other to work on best practice, discuss issues and provide mutual support.
Mentoring does not require a huge time commitment, and is tailored to suit the mentor-mentee pair.
Mentors often feel highly valued by their mentees and enjoy the opportunity to help nurture the new generation of doctors.
Please email emilygr@med.usyd.edu.au for more information or if you would like to become more involved
Light refreshments will be served

2010 Annual Women in Medicine Dinner
Thursday July 29th, 6:30pm at the Women’s College of the University of Sydney
Each year the Sydney University Medical Society holds a dinner for medical students and for women who are currently practicing in the medical field. The aim of the evening is to provide an opportunity for students to hear from prominent female doctors about their personal and/or professional experiences (challenges and opportunities!) that have shaped their professional career and which could help inspire blossoming medical students. The relatively informal nature of the evening also allows the students to converse with the doctors on an intimate level over catered dinner
and drinks. Not surprisingly, the evening is mutually enjoyed by the attending doctors. It is a chance for them to meet local, female colleagues and provide another avenue to pass on their valuable insight to keen future doctors.
We are very excited to have our speakers this year:
Dr Marion Mateos - Paediatrics
(Doctor TBA)- Sponsored by the Defence Force Recruiting
Dr Sharon Tivey- Anaesthesia
We would be delighted for you to attend the Women and Medicine Dinner this year,
held on at the Women’s College of the University of Sydney (Camperdown Campus).
The total cost of the evening is $80 for doctors and $50 for students.
Please contact me to confirm your attendance by emailing: rmcd6966@uni.sydney.edu.au and by registering for the event on the Medical Society website:
http://sydneymedsoc.org.au
The Women in Medicine dinner will be full of learning and inspiration; please join us for an evening of good food, great conversation and fabulous people!
