Cumberland Conservation Corridor: an essential wildlife refuge for Sydney's west
On July 23, members of the Western Sydney Conservation Alliance (WSCA) showed the Nature Conservation Council's Cate Faehrmann, Jonathan Boys and Jane Garcia around some of the sites proposed for the Cumberland Conservation Corridor (CCC) in Sydney’s outer west, including the former Australian Defence Industry (ADI) site pictured left.
The corridor would protect an area of about 10,000 hectares, forming an essential, uninterrupted link of large bushland remnants from Mulgoa Nature Reserve to Agnes Banks Nature Reserve.
The CCC would preserve the remaining ecological communities of the Cumberland Plain. It would provide an effective safety net for wildlife that may need to change range with the onset of the effects of climate change or when disaster strikes such as bushfires or land clearing.
The corridor habitat takes on added significance given the growth centres strategy for Sydney will see up to 12 per cent of the remaining Cumberland Plain destroyed for development.

Mining jobs won't last - our need for water will
The front page of yesterday's Sydney Morning Herald carried a story on the disturbing approval by NSW Planning Minister Kristina Keneally of a new longwall coalmine underneath Sydney's water supply at Woronora Reservoir. (New mine could crack dam floor by Ben Cubby.)
Longwall mining activities have the potential to crack the dam floor, causing serious leaks, environmental damage and threatening Sydney's water supply. However, Minister Keneally was reported as disingenuously describing her decision as trade-off between environmental damage and jobs.
Read our Executive Director, Cate Faehrmann's Letter to the Editor in response to the Minister, which was published in today's Sydney Morning Herald.
Get involved in revising plans of management for three national parks
Stakeholder registration for the revision of plans of management for Blue Mountains, Kanangra-Boyd and Wollemi National Parks is now open.
Plans of management are legal documents created under the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Act 1974. They are a key tool in the management of NSW national parks and reserves, covering a range of issues including fire, pest animals, weeds, threatened species, Aboriginal and historic heritage, recreation and education.
Plans of management for Blue Mountains, Kanangra-Boyd and Wollemi National Parks, part of the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area, are currently being re-written. An opportunity exists for stakeholders to register their interest in being included in the planning process.

North Sydney and Warringah go for gold in climate action
Record breaking North Sydney On 17 June 2009, the North Sydney Climate Challenge Awards Night celebrated the 551 households who had participated in the six month challenge to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions both in the home and in the community. North Sydney had the largest number of households to ever participate in a Challenge run by the Nature Conservation Council.
On the Awards Night, certificates were given to 21 'Challenge Champions' who had received more than 35 stars in their Challenge passbooks. The community heard from several leaders in the community who want to start up a climate action group, set up a group dedicated to becoming a transition town, create a community group to initiate communal composting areas in apartment blocks, create a community group who will focus on creating a community garden and rainwater harvesting area in Forsyth Park in Neutral Bay and develop a community group to initiate wind-farm partnerships with rural communities.
Take a look at the North Sydney Climate Challenge Awards Night Photo Album .
Warringah celebrates its climate action success On 29 June 2009, the Warringah Climate Challenge finished with a celebratory Awards Night held at Warringah Council Chambers. More than 420 households reduced their greenhouse gas emissions, both in the home and in the community.
Twenty-three households became Challenge Champions on the Awards Night after receiving more than 35 stars in their Challenge Passbooks. The Community heard from several leaders in their community who want to: take action and set up groups to become a transition town, make Warringah the most pedestrian and bicycle friendly Council in Australia, set up “the most sustainable street” campaign which rewards sustainable streets with street signs and a group who work to streamline the process for local public schools to apply for the National Solar Schools Grant. Biodiversity Under Fire conference a raging success
The Biodiversity Under Fire Conference was a big success. More than 170 delegates gathered to discuss ecologically sustainable bushfire management in the context of the threats to Australia’s biodiversity. Attendees included representatives from 16 State Government agencies, 14 conservation agencies, 13 councils and six universities across four states and two territories.
NSW Minister for Emergency Services, Steve Whan, opened the seventh Bush Fire Management Program conference, before nationally and internationally recognised scientists and NRM managers led two days of presentations and interactive panels discussing bush fire management, how it effects biodiversity and how best to manage fire for biodiversity. Keyspeakers included NSW Rural Fire Service Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons (pictured above left) and the University of Wollongong's Professor Ross Bradstock.
They shared ideas on the complex issue of bushfire management and gained a new understanding of the role of fire in the Australian landscape. The conference was primarily sponsored through our major sponsors the NSW Rural Fire Service and the Fire Management Unit , NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (DECC) along with contributions from Travers Bush Fire and Ecology, Eco Logical, NSW Fire Brigades as well as the Northern Rivers Catchment Management Authority.
Proceedings from the conference will be available early next week.
