Hi all
The sun has returned to beam down upon the luvverly patrons of Beeses, who
have realised that there a few better ways of spending a summer evening
than sitting by the river with a cool drink and good food. But as
well as the natural delights that Beeses has to offer, we are still
looking at other ways to tempt you...
Music
Gypie Mayo (ex-Dr Feelgood and The Yardbirds) and Chuck McQuillan are
continuing with their regular Wednesday evening slots. They kick off
at 7:00 p.m., well before tonight's footy, so if you prefer not to see
the mighty Estonia inflict further humiliation on our humble millionaires,
leave the Ingerland fans at home (or at other, ahem, less well
appointed establishments...) and indulge in some quality music.
And you can still get home in time for the Match Of The Day
'highlights', so everyone's a winner! Except England,
probably...
In recent weeks, Gypie and Chuck have been able to play on the deck with
the weather being so good, and they'll be doing so again if the
weather holds. Judging by the aromas wafting from the kitchen,
Ma's rather popular homemade curry is having an extended run as the
special menu offer, and on Wednesdays you can grab a plateful of this with
pilau rice, mango chutney and a bottle of Kingfisher, all for a measly
fiver. The kitchen is open until 9:00 p.m. on week nights, so git
yourself some!

More music
You might recall that we had our first open mic night last month, and this
proved more successful than we could have hoped for. Almost 30
musicians came down and played for us in assorted solo, duo and trio
combinations. The folk and blues fans who came found plenty to enjoy
(there were certainly a few dead lifeboatmen memorialised...), and we were
also treated to a fantastic beat box performance by Vid, impressing all the
older hands, most of whom probably wouldn't describe themselves as hip
hop fans.
As you can see from the
accompanying photos, the weather meant that we
were also able to hold this on the deck, and it
went on so late that Ma had to break out the Beeses shawls for those that missed the sun
after it went down. Don't forget to ask to borrow one if you
stay with us into the night...
Our next open mic
night is on Thursday 14 June, and starts at 8:30 p.m.
Beeses Quiz night
In the same week, we held our first quiz night which was run for us by
Professor Kev Beese. We had six or seven teams participating, the
winner being Pooh Corner, although they should have been disqualified for
the barracking they dished out to the poor quizmaster. Our next quiz
is on Tuesday 19 June, starting at 8:30, and this one will also be run by
the good Prof. We will be inviting teams to submit and run their own
quizzes in subsequent months.
New menu items
We have some new additions to the menu. We're now offering baked
potatoes with any combination of cheese, coleslaw or tuna mayonnaise
fillings from £3.25. We also have a number of salads, starting
at £3.95:
• a classic Caesar Salad
• a soon-to-be classic Beeser Salad (the same as a
Caesar but with bacon and chicken)
• Tuna Nicoise, with tuna, anchovies, capers,
mixed leaf lettuce, tomatoes, new potatoes, boiled egg, green beans and
olives
We're also selling ice cream once again, following a short-lived
attempt to do so at the beginning of the season that was curtailed by one
of our freezers unexpectedly going to the celestial branch of Comet (via
the St Phillips refuse dump). We now serve Tarr’s famous ice
cream in a number of flavours served with strawberry, fudge or chocolate
sauce and Chantilly cream.
Media matters
Following the reference in last month's newsletter to Trevor The
Lockeeper's efforts to buy his home, one of you beautiful people
forwarded the newsletter to the BBC. As a result, Trevor's story
ended up on Points West, and you can see the item on the BBC
News web site. If you haven't bought his songs yet, you can
do so via Trevor's
Myspace site.
Beeses was also
featured as Pub Of The Week in Venue recently, and you can read the full
article by clicking on the image on the right. If you think that
Pa's normally toothsome grin has a certain rictus quality to it,
please bear in mind that with the shot taking a full five minutes to be
completed, the concern at the queue of thirsty drinkers that he could see
out of the corner of his eye was compounded by the fact that he had never
held on to a pint for so long without being able to drink from it or take
money for it...
Talking of which, in the words of the marvellous Terry Anderson and the
Olympic Ass-Kickin Team, he feels a drunk
coming on, so without further ado, adieu...
