NO SUPPORT FROM CREATIVE NEW ZEALAND
2011 has seen the Cultural Icons project grow from strength to strength with 50 interviews and programmes now recorded and many more planned. The significance of the project has been recognised nationally with dozens of links forming between the Cultural Icons website and arts organisations, libraries, galleries, museums, arts/culture websites and other international online resources such as Wikipedia.
However we are dismayed to receive the latest news from Creative New Zealand announcing The Depot's Arts Grant application for support for the project (20 new visual arts interviews) has been unsuccessful.
With their perplexing decision not to fund the project, we are now seeking other avenues of support. Your feedback and involvement is welcomed in any form. To read more please see: http://ymlp.com/zHDO75

We invite you to nominate individuals from these areas who have contributed significantly to shaping New Zealand's arts and culture scene.
One nominee from each area will be invited to take part in the Cultural Icons project and the recorded interview will be launched in that Cultural Icon's local community at a celebratory event.

Rodney Wilson: Mo’s Kitchen: An anthropology of the kitchen
11 February – 1 March 2012
Opening in Main Gallery on: Saturday 11 February 4.30 - 6pm
"Mo’s kitchen is a place of peace, delight, love and labour; a refuge. It is also a place of intrigue and passion as some of these little recordings attempt to show. Forgive me for adding further foodist folly to a world that craves its next hysteria. Some are born to lead, but some of us are just born to follow.”
Rodney Wilson has been director of Christchurch’s Robert McDougall Art Gallery, Auckland Art Gallery, the National Gallery of Victoria, Auckland War Memorial Museum and founding director of the New Zealand National Maritime Museum.

Prudence MacDougall: Chimera
22 November - 10 December
Morning Tea: 10am Saturday 3 + Tuesday 6 December
Exhibition opening hours: 10am - 6pm Monday - Saturday
The Chimera is an extraordinary fire breathing creature from Greek mythology. It was initially a grotesque combination of a lion, a goat and a serpent and the central figure of one of the earliest legends depicted in Greek art. However, any imaginary creature made up of different animals can be referred to as a ‘Chimera’.
Although strongly influenced by Goya, Prudence’s fantastical beasts are always portrayed with great humour and charm; creations more at home in children’s fairy tales than the horror of nightmares.
ON NOW:
The Print Salon: Group Show
22 November - 24 December
Exhibition opening hours: 10am - 6pm Monday - Saturday
A group show including various printmaking processes such as print intaglio, dry point, solar plate and screen print; by artists Philippa Bentley, Lianne Chua, Sue Cooke, Julia Ellery, Julienne Francis, Faith Thomas, Susan Hurrell Fieldes, Ellen Reimann-Filby and Fleur Williams.
Tina Frantzen: Entr’acte
13 December - 24 December
Opening at Satellite on: Tuesday 13 December 5:30 – 7pm
Exhibition opening hours 10am - 6pm Monday - Friday, 10am - 3pm Saturday
Tina paints intuitively using the qualities of light to illuminate elusive and enigmatic figures, the details of each being unknown to her before painting commences, so that with each work there is a process of discovery.

CULTURAL MAPPING PROJECT IS TAKING OFF!
A strong philosophy is developing behind the project, one that builds on a holistic perspective. We’ve noticed inter-connectivity between the different mapping examples being produced and we are excited about how potentially significant visualising this inter-connectivity may be in understanding a holistic world view. More news to follow soon, but in the meantime why not call into the Depot’s Vernacular Lounge to view the cultural maps developed during the early stages of the project?
'A Place Like Devonport', which maps creative people's connections to the landscape; the draft of New Zealand composers' ‘origins and influences’ map; and the Molly Macalister sculptural development map are all currently on display.

NOVEMBER DEPOT SOUND SUMMER NOTICES
|
- Richard Anderton has brought us a cover version of the song ‘Chain of Fools’ for mixing and mastering. COF is a song written by Don Covay and first released by Aretha Franklin as a single in 1967. Richard tracked the song himself completing vocal and percussion recording at the studio where we now mix and master it.
- John Mackay has brought us 2 songs of musical genius. The plan is for us to complete recording, mixing and mastering (108 instruments and 38 vocal tracks). Originally from Toronto, Canada, via California USA, John now resides on Waiheke Island. www.johnmackaymusic.com
- Work continues with Unknown Peace, Surf Friends, James Crompton and StrayHound albums, these are due for completion over the following weeks. The future holds several new projects such as a short album for Pedro Eguren, demos for Richard Foreman and Sagans Eye, 2 singles for Cubanos Accentos and much more.

NEW BLOG FOR THE FRONT ROOM ART & OBJECT
|
The new Front Room blog (frontroomart.tumblr.com) aims to give our wonderful collection of artists and their works a presence on the internet.
This means people from further afield can check out what Front Room has on offer and alerts our followers to changes in stock, to events, exhibitions and opportunities.
The blog is also a fantastic way to increase the visibility and accessibility of not only our amazing artists and creators, but also Front Room and The Depot to a wider audience.
Our thanks to Sarah Bing, our new volunteer and support person, for setting this up. You'll be seeing more of Sarah around The Depot. Thanks also to Sue Lorimer who has been a fantastic, almost indispensible volunteer and to Erika Smith whose welcoming face is a great asset to The Depot.

Last week we said good bye to our gallery staff members Laurel Belworthy and Greg Smith who both have had a long association with The Depot in various guises; Laurel initially as exhibiting artist and Greg through the ArtsLab programme and through design and architecture exhibitions he installed here.
Laurel has now returned to her own arts practice and will be pursuing a career in arts education. Before working at The Depot Laurel initiated and ran the Children’s Art House at the Devonport Community Centre and her passion for working with children remains.
Greg is working as a technician at West Auckland’s regional gallery, Lopdell House. He is also continuing his research into New Zealand’s vernacular architecture and architects with the intention of publishing a book on their work. Greg will be exhibiting again at The Depot in 2012 with his third ‘Lost Property’ exhibition. Greg’s website is www.lostproperty.org.nz for more information about his research.
We wish Greg and Laurel all the very best with their future projects, and look forward to their continued involvement in The Depot.
