Tricks "End of Summer" report 2010!

So far, so good!

After a quick winter break where we added 23 favorite songs into the setlist,
Tricks blasted into the 2nd decade of the 21st Century!

• Early March, We bypassed our usual Tricks "coming out" party and went straight into the Wayland Hotel for 3 weekends in March, including a massively wild and very green St. Patty's celebration.

• Late March, Steve was gone south -
A pause in Tricks action for a few weeks. Rick & Krys did a couple acoustic gigs near Allegan.
First a mysterious and impromptu Art Gallery, then Eagle Creek Golf Clubhouse.

• April - Back to the Bars
In early April, Tricks got back to work at Hilliards Corner Lounge.
It was a great party scene, with Bassbeast running amuck in the crowd.

• 2 weeks off in mid-April
What the heck? Let's get going!
We're gonna forget everything we learned in the basement during winter break.
Rick & Krys did a couple unique gigs around the Allegan area.
One at a downtown Allegan bar, "The Iron Bridge", another for Allegan Area Arts Council.
(The AAAC people said that no one ever danced at one of their receptions before!)

Rick also did a very strange "no electricity" gig at Rose's On Reed's Lake, to celebrate Earth Day. Whatever! No pictures either. What are we, Amish?!

• May - Back to the Bars, again ...
Tricks finally returned to Sue's Sidetrack.
... Just in time for Michigan's "Smoking Ban" to go into effect.
In honor of Michigan's politically-correct jump onto the no-smoking bandwagon,
Tricks smoked up the place with our fog machine.

The jailbird ladies are raising money for Relay for Life, in case you wondered about that.

• Speaking of Sidetrack charity events,

Memorial Day weekend, Tricks played a free party gig for Doug & Leslie's "Ride for the Cure".

A motorcycle run, chicken bar-b-q, kegger, camp-out, & Tricks party.

First ride of the year; lower than expected turn-out, but they raised $1400 for Relay for Life.
Very cool party. Very fun. They want to do it again next year, maybe later in the summer.

Rick and Krys also did a couple very fun and interesting gigs around Memorial Day weekend.
Roadhouse Bike Night in Paw Paw, and a birthday party for twins Shawn & Ryan.

• Kicking into overdrive ...?

In June, Tricks returned to the Wayland Hotel.

The Smoking Ban on the back of the bad economy has slowed things down.

But, that doesn't stop Tricks from having some fun rock and roll nights in Wayland.

June 12, Saturday was an extra fun night. A special party for grads of OK Blue Conference.

It was a (non-reunion) party put together by Bassbeast and some of his school pals.

Meanwhile, Rick's solo career keeps getting more and more interesting.
Eric the owner at Hilliards Corners wants solo music on Sunday afternoons during summer.

Rick decides to split that job with piano-rocker Tom Northrup (of Frau Brau fame).

And, Rick starts playing some Thursdays in Hastings, at the very cool Walldorff Brewpub.

Rick & Krys also had fun at Steve's annual Kielbasa Cook-Out!

• Hot Summer Fun

In late June and early July, Tricks had three awesome gigs:

Last weekend of June, we had 2 packed nights at the Log Cabin in G.R.!

4th of July Weekend, Tricks played on the Riverfront in downtown Allegan!

July 10th, Tricks played at Cap'n Craig's barn in Hudsonville, for Jane's 50th B-Day Bash!

Wow, that's a whole lotta fun!!

See the calendar below for what musical party treats Tricks has planned for the second half of 2010.

• Rick & Krys never stop rocking! - How is Rick's solo career going?

Although Tricks has 4 weeks off for summer break, Rick keeps working on expanding his solo career, with the help of some duet gigs with Krystal. Thank you very much!

For all the Rick Doogie details, see Rick's website here.
As you see, Rick is doing quite well finding venues for his solo acoustic guitar show. It's slow getting a foot in the door along the lakeshore, but that's finally starting to happen. It's a "Catch 22" - you can't get gigs without references and you can't get references without gigs.
If this keeps up, we'll need a separate Doogie Newsletter.
Please e-mail suggestions for restaurants or bars that have solo acoustic guitar entertainment.

Here's that juicy gossip part of the newsletter, you bloodthirsty hordes!

• Sad to say, Dave Bassbeast has served us notice that he needs to be finished with Tricks after 2010's schedule is finished. He can barely keep up juggling the heavy Tricks workload while doing lots of travel involved with his Quality Manager job at SoundTech. We'll miss him a lot. We really liked the heavy punch that Dave added to the Tricks sound. And we'll miss his entertaining stage presence. We're not going to say much more about it right now, because we have lots of fun parties left to attend to.

Things will work out for everyone, if we keep working at it!

• Another sad note is that Sue from the Sidetrack called us yesterday and told us that she can't afford bands on Fridays any more. She is cutting back to Saturday-nights-only for the big bands. Fridays will either be solo or duet music like the Rick & Krys Show, or she has a Dee-Jay who will fill in on Friday's. She hopes things will bounce back, but she has been losing money every since the Smoking Ban started. Even her food profits are way down. Sue says that she'll do whatever it takes to keep the Sidetrack open for business. We all care very much for Sue and her Sidetrack business. Sue holds all kinds of charity events year-round. She doesn't deserve the heartbreak of worrying whether her business is going to stay afloat or not.
