Canonicus is a Ministry of the American Baptist Churches of RI

As we enter the Holiday season, we ask that you will take a moment to remember and give thanks for the ministries at Canonicus. Looking ahead to 2010 we are facing difficult economic times - however, ABCORI's commitment to the camp & conference ministry is unwavering.
Your year-end financial gift DOES make a difference and is greatly appreciated. Please consider making a one-time year-end gift to our Canonicus Turtle Team campership program.  All Turtle Team donations are restricted solely for camper scholarships.

Your support goes far to touch many lives.

"Dear ABCORI Friends,

Thank you for giving us money to go to camp. I cant wait to go to camp again next time"

~Children From
Bethany Baptist Church

"I want to thank you again for the camp scholarships for Nathan & Gabriel. We have been so blessed by your ministry. I am sure they will have many good memories of the time spent here during the summers of their youth"

Message from our Director

Dear

Changing Times: As you have probably heard by now, our Board of Ministries has voted to reduce our regional expenses for 2010 by eliminating the full time combined staff position of Assistant Camp Director & Technology Coordinator that is currently filled by Matt Black.  Unfortunately the state of the economy has impacted our region so directly that we now suffer the loss of Matt who has been an invaluable asset to Canonicus for almost 10 years.  Matt began working for the region in 2000 as a maintenance staff person facilitating many improvements to the property. When I came to Canonicus in January 2006, I not only observed Matt’s dedication and commitment to maintaining the property but also working with the youth, as well as his giftedness in technology.  In 2007 Matt agreed to work with me as the full-time Assistant Camp Director/Technology Coordinator.  He helped me bring the use of technology in our ABCORI offices closer to the 21st century.  As the summer camp season approached, the camp staff welcomed Matt and he developed close relationships with the staff as he made lasting impressions upon all of us at camp.  The ABCORI office staff recently enjoyed walking the property with Matt as he shared some of his more humorous and notable maintenance & camp stories! No matter which role Matt has filled he has been truly dedicated to the ministries of ABCORI and Canonicus and we will miss him and his work among us very much.

You Are Invited! Please join me in thanking Matt for sharing his skills, knowledge and gentle spirit with us all by attending a party in his honor at Shaub Lodge, Sunday, January 3 from 2-3:30 PM!  If you plan to attend, please RSVP by Tuesday, 12/23 by calling the main office or emailing me at Liz@abcori.org .   If you are unable to attend and would like to send Matt a card and words of thanks his address is: 12 Westwood Avenue, Cranston, RI 02905.  Matt’s last day in the offices will be Friday, 12/18.  He will be taking the last 2 weeks of the year to enjoy vacation time and Christmas.

Looking Ahead: The 2010 camp program administration & design will be similar to camp seasons previous to 2007. I will utilize both part-time and seasonal program staff to work with me each day in the care and management of camp ministry. I have already begun initial steps to manage camp with experienced adult staff who will work alongside me in laying the ground work ensuring a successful winter day camp program and a fulfilling summer camp program.  Naturally some reconfiguration of assigments and responsibilities will take place, but I am confident that the camp staff and the campers will enjoy camp in 2010! Look for details in our January Newsletter!

Camp Staff Alumni Party: All camp staff members are invited for a party at Shaub Lodge on Sunday, January 3 from 4 – 7 PM.  A light meal will be served at 5 PM.  This event has been distributed via Facebook, so please RSVP to me via Facebook or, if you are not on FB, via email.

NEW for 2010 ~ STAFF ALUMNI SHIRTS! Newly designed ALUMNI long sleeved shirts are now available at only $10 each if you order them before Christmas. Please indicate the sizes needed by contacting me directly or when you RSVP to the party for Matt or Alumni Staff.  If you cannot attend either event, you may still order a shirt.  Payment may be made in person on January 3rd or by mail.

We're always looking for Volunteers!

There are MANY ways to support the ministries at Canonicus. Beyond the obvious needs, including prayer and financial support, is the very important role of the volunteer. Volunteer opportunities at Canonicus abound—here are just a couple of ways…

Camp Program Support:
Do you enjoy music, cooking, nature, sports, gardening or simply working with youth? Help campers grow in their faith and realize their full potential. Dedicate a few hours of your time each day for one week – for school vacation CAMP-CATION! or summer camp- and help run or assist with a specialty program.  Or consider being a counselor!

Monday Raiders:
Every Monday, a group of dedicated men gather at Canonicus for fellowship and volunteer work. Tasks vary from week to week and typically include painting, construction, plumbing, major and minor repairs, electrical work, welding—just to name a few. Women are welcome too! A delicious lunch is always served! Contact us for more information
