Despite cheap talk, polluter compensation costs dear under amended CPRS

Smoke stackThe Rudd Government's latest amendments to the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme lock the country into dangerous levels of greenhouse gas emissions and provide billions in compensation to big polluters.

The unprecedented scenes in Federal Parliament this week are an unwelcome sideshow to the critically important decisions being made on climate change by our political leaders. Neither side of politics has shown true leadership for real action on reducing greenhouse gas emissions or taken significant steps towards a clean, green economy.

The Nature Conservation Council believes the biggest opportunity to address greenhouse gas emissions Australia has ever had will most likely be squandered by locking Australia into billions in compensation and exemptions to big polluters for the next 10 years.

The peak conservation councils around Australia have called on both sides of politics to reject the amended and now fatally flawed emissions trading legislation and instead commit to action that will reduce Australia’s emissions by at least 40 per cent by 2020.

Earlier this year, the groups outlined a suite of measures that can be in place within two years to put Australia within reach of halving its greenhouse emissions within a decade in a report, Plan B: an Agenda for Immediate Climate Action, available here .

We look with interest to this weekend's meeting of Commonwealth leaders in the lead-up to the UN Climate Summit in Copenhagen from 7th December.

Coal expansion proposals gather pace in NSW - have your say

Although coal is a major cause of climate change, the rush of applications to expand coal facilities and infrastructure in NSW continues (see Submissions Open below).

Hot on the heels of the proposal to refurbish a mothballed coal-fired power station at Munmorah on Lake Macquarie, comes
Ulan Coal Mine's application for an increase in coal production to 20MT per year with a 21-year lease.

The State Government should not allow the expansion of coal production or grant long-term leases if NSW is to address its growing rate of greenhouse gas emissions and transition towards a clean, green future.

The Nature Conservation Council urges groups and individual's to make a submission against the proposal by Friday 4th December.  You can use our submission guideline available here.

The Nature Conservation Council of NSW

The NSW Government is reminding households to take advantage of the $35 Fridge Buyback Scheme
today as the program expands to the Blue Mountains, Central Coast, Illawarra and Shellharbour.
NSW Minister for Climate Change and the Environment John Robertson said the Fridge Buyback
Scheme pays households $35 to remove any fridge, more than 10 years of age and bigger than 250
litres, to be recycled.
“Through Fridge Buyback, you get the fridge taken away for free, you save money on your power bills,
reduce your carbon footprint and get paid $35,” said Mr Robertson.
“Every fridge taken out of circulation saves one tonne of carbon pollution a year and about $210 on
annual power bills.
“Since 2006, more than 11,000 inefficient second fridges have been taken out of circulation, reducing
carbon pollution by the equivalent of taking 2750 cars off the road.
“Over the same period Fridge Buyback has saved consumers an estimated $2.3 million on their
electricity bills.
“Fridges are one of the biggest power users in the home and because second fridges are usually older
and less efficient, they can use up to three times the power of a new fridge.
“Expanding the program to the Blue Mountains, Central Coast and Shellharbour will give hundreds of
thousands more NSW residents the chance to get rid of their old fridge and save money and
greenhouse gas emissions.”
Mr Robertson said that every fridge collected is professionally degassed under licence to destroy all
damaging gases and all the metals are recycled.
Fridge Buyback will be rolled out to the new regions in partnership with local councils from October.
To be eligible for Fridge Buyback, second fridges must be at least 10 years old and 250 litres in size.
The $35 rebate is paid for collection from homes with less than six steps. Collection is free, but no
rebate is paid, where collection involves between 6-20 steps.
The Fridge Buyback program is coordinated by Next Energy and funded through the NSW
Government’s Climate Change Fund.
Sydney, Wollongong, Shellharbour, Central Coast and Blue Mountains residents can book a collection
online at www.fridgebuyback.com.au or call 1800 708 401.
