Winter is made warm by...
...other people.
Central heating helps, yes you are right.

Singing's also pretty good I find.
I spent Monday evening down in Brighton, in a small circle of friends. Fire in the hearth, fitting old folksongs into our wintry heads, assisted by a mulled cider or two.

And Tuesday I walked along the prom where the Winter waves had kicked the beach pebbles up onto the path. Watched the rain splutter over Hove and head towards me. I bumped into a very nice lady called Peace who shared her umbrella with me, and on our walk she told me stories from her hometown in Uganda, and about how she always likes to expect the best of every stranger she bumps into.  Ooh, and then we looked at the rainbows together when the sun came out.

Here's the underlying philosophy on which the Willesden Green Wassail was created: Sometimes it feels like individual daily actions are too small to make a dent in the larger problems of the world; but I'm pretty sure that society won't take a peaceful direction if we don't even know how to speak with our neighbours, or sing with friends, or expect the best of strangers.
You get the picture.

And may the people you meet and spend time with see and celebrate the best in you, too.

All my love and thanks for your support in 2011,

The Verb & In Tune, BBC Radio iPlayer
Have a listen to this commission (16mins) from the BBC to celebrate the upcoming Bicentenary of Dickens' birth. It's up on BBC iPlayer until Friday evening, but will be on my website shortly if you miss it.
You can also hear my beloved creation The Willesden Green Wassail featured on BBC Radio's In Tune (58mins in), also on BBC Radio 3.  The producer-man said he called me because when he googled for Urban Wassail, we were the only one he found. Hopefully that'll change :)
