Don't allow our precious native forests to burn for electricity
Japanese paper giant, Nippon Paper has a proposal to build a power station at the Eden Chip Mill that will be fueled by NSW's South East precious native forests. They're even branding it as 'green energy'.
Already the Eden Chip Mill destroys thousands of trees from the South-East forests to be chipped and shipped to Japan where it is pulped into paper. Now they want to burn the native forest 'waste' to generate electricity.
The last known colony of koalas in the far South Coast lives in these forests. These forests also store a vast amount of carbon in its biomass and soils that will be released if it is logged, contributing to climate change.
A decision on whether to approve the forest furnace will be made by the NSW government in the near future.

Federal politicians spooked by call for greater action on biodiversity
Forty environment groups from across Australia have called for the Australian Government to act decisively to protect biodiversity in 2010, the United Nations International Year of Biodiversity, and endorse the Boobook Declaration.
The groups, representing hundreds of thousands of Australians, want the Government to triple biodiversity investment to $9 billion over three years for on-ground work, stewardship payments, water buy-back, protected area extension and management, research, education and training.
A Greens motion supporting Boobook Declaration was introduced in Federal Parliament earlier this week, but disappointingly both Labor and the Coalition voted against it. The environment groups will continue their calls for government investment in protecting and managing biodiversity.

Have your spotted a kangaroo, owl or wombat recently?
NSW residents have been asked to map sightings of wildlife in an online survey which will assist scientists to learn more about the habitats of native species.
The online survey follows data gathered in a 2006 postal survey to locate animals in areas where they have not been identified before. The data will inform efforts to meet NSW State Plan targets of an increase in the recovery of threatened species, populations and ecological communities and a reduction in the impact of invasive species by 2015.
You can take the online survey here . It should take about 20 minutes.

Member Group News: Help save a marine sea turtle
The Wildlife Preservation Society of Australia is calling for donations to support the Cairns Turtle
Rehabilitation Centre in their project to develop water holding facilities for the rehabilitation of turtles.
The Society's Scientific Advisor, Dr Jennie Gilbert (pictured above), has asked for assistance in providing two new tanks to rehabilitate a number of sea turtles that have been rescued recently.
The turtle rehabilitation centre is the only one north of Townsville and is very much in demand for rehabilitation of turtles, particularly turtles coming into care from Cape York. Some of these turtles may be in care for 6 to 12 months depending on the nature of their injury or disease.
The fundraising target for the two new tanks is $3400. You can donate by calling 02 9556 1537 with your credit card details or donate online. All donations are tax deductible.
